About
The roots of the Salem Free Public Library reach back to 1804, when it was first established as part of the Library Company of Salem. For a brief period, the library’s story was interrupted when the Library Company disbanded between 1809 and 1843. Yet the idea of a public library never completely faded from the community’s heart. In 1863, nearly twenty years later, John Tyler took up the cause of bringing a library back to the people of Salem, ensuring that knowledge and literature would once again be within reach for all.
Since that revival, the Salem Free Public Library has been in continuous operation, making it the second oldest operating public library in New Jersey. For generations, it has stood as both a source of learning and a symbol of Salem’s dedication to education, civic pride, and community growth.
The library’s current home, completed in 1885, was designed by noted architect George Hewitt. Built in the high Victorian Romanesque style—characterized by heavy stonework, arched windows, and intricate detailing—the building reflects the architectural tastes of its era while standing as a proud landmark in Salem. Today, well into the 21st century, the library remains committed to preserving that historic charm while embracing new technologies and resources that ensure modern access to information.
As a municipal library, the Salem Free Public Library is supported in part by city revenue. Yet its lasting strength also comes from the generosity of three devoted advocates – Elizabeth Fogg, Eleanor Rumsey and Granvile S. Thomas – who established trust funds to secure the library’s future. Thanks to their foresight and the ongoing support of the community, the citizens of Salem can continue to enjoy a place of discovery, connection, and lifelong learning for generations to come.
